Reflecting on my reading programme

I have had a colleague observe me in regards to my professional inqwuiry around motivated learners during independent reading time.
The children in my class are definitely engaged during learning time in a range of word and language based activities (spelling, phonics, writing, handwriting, SRA kit). I wonder if there would be greater value added to my program if there were less of these activities and more of a read read read approach?
Choildren who read perform better at school, and the only way to improve is by high reading mileage.
How do I create a balanced program that has a balance of reading and acitivites that the children find engaging?
